Shorefast: Economic Nutrition

APPLIED RESEARCH

Client: Shorefast

Location: Fogo Island, Newfoundland, Canada

Year: 2021 - 2022

Overview

A hotel can transform a whole island’s economy – one night, one bedspread, one meal, one chair at a time. Shorefast, a Canadian charitable organization, is advancing a powerful theory of change through a series of interconnected “community enterprises,” including the Fogo Island Inn, Fogo Island Workshops, Fogo Island Arts, and Growler’s Ice Cream.

Every time a guest arrives on this small piece of land in the Atlantic Ocean, they support the community economy. Shorefast developed the Economic Nutrition label to show the impact of every dollar – what percentage goes to things like materials, labor, advertising, and how much stays local or moves off the island. The concept is modeled on food nutrition facts: a standard system that helps consumers make informed choices. The idea had genuine potential to rewire consumer behavior in support of local economies – far beyond Fogo Island. What it needed was a strategy, a message, and a proof point.

What We Did

Field States began with strategic analysis, researching certification systems from B Corps to organic agriculture to Kosher food and mapping the organizational model and financial architecture that would make Economic Nutrition viable at scale. From there, we moved into communication design: refining the label’s messaging, creating a full brand and design system, writing and animating an explainer video, and launching a website for the initiative. Finally, we designed and ran a live pilot at Growlers Ice Cream on Fogo Island to test how the concept resonated with real customers in a real place. The work was exhibited at the BIO27 international design fair in Ljubljana.

What We Made

Business model and financial analysis, certification system architecture design, strategic roadmap, brand identity and design system, explainer video and animation, website, pilot program design and implementation, and a staff training protocol with customer evaluation framework.

Impact

The pilot succeeded. Staff felt confident using the system, customers found the label legible and compelling – several indicated it would shift their purchasing behavior. Using our work, Shorefast is expanding the program to a cohort of small businesses across Canada through the Shorefast Institute for Community Economies.
