Overview
The Port of Portland gained international recognition for the new main terminal at Portland International Airport (PDX) – a building celebrated for its mass timber construction. Mass timber is an emerging industry that is generating remarkable momentum in the Pacific Northwest. The Port of Portland is working in partnership with other public sector partners and industry leaders to grow the industry in the region. The Port’s redevelopment of Terminal 2 into the Mass Timber and Housing Innovation Campus is underway, and the Port sought to understand opportunities to support smaller companies scaling in this industry on the new campus.
What We Did
Field States conducted a feasibility study that explored concepts for an innovation center at the Mass Timber and Housing Innovation Campus at Terminal 2. The study evaluated opportunities for emerging mass timber and housing companies to grow and scale on the campus alongside industry leaders and academic researchers. The study included a market analysis, stakeholder interviews with leading construction and development firms, a precedent study of 20+ innovation hubs across sectors, value chain mapping, ecosystem assessment, and three-scenario financial modeling.
